Happy Howloween!
Canine Campus will hold its annual Howling Contest at 11:30am on Oct 31.
Why Do Dogs Howl?
Dogs are distantly related to wolves; the urge to howl is deeply embedded in their genetic code. Sometimes, your dog doesn’t even know why they are howling, especially when in the pack. Howling is totally normal and natural.
Interestingly enough, there isn’t much research on dog howling. There is much more research on barking, body language and human-dog interaction. It’s hard to conduct research on dogs howling because it’s almost impossible to study howling in the wild.
Researchers do know that coyotes and wolves howl to establish their territory, warn competitors, connect with pack members that have been separated from the pack and attract mates. Dogs are highly social; howling is a way of showing they belong to the pack.
Dogs Love to Howl
One thing we know for sure is that dogs enjoy howling.
We’re helping our choir students practice up on their “singing” for the big event. Please make sure your students continue their practice at home too. We will be giving prizes away for the following categories:
- Scariest Howl
- Most Beautiful Howl
- Most Unique Howl
Come join the fun and watch the choir October 31st at 11:30 am. We’d love to see you!
