The holiday season is upon us, and most of us will be out shopping in the next few weeks for gifts, holiday decorations, home improvement items and, whatever else strikes our fancy. The daunting task of checking every box on your Christmas shopping list can seem a little more manageable when you have your furry buddy in tow.

In the past, most businesses have had a policy of not accepting pets unless they were service dogs. There were very few exceptions, and most of them were small, family-owned businesses or, naturally, pet stores.

However, as pet ownership in the U.S. has exploded, businesses have increasingly become accommodating to our pets. According to the American Pet Products Association, an estimated $72.13 billion will be spent on pets in 2018. Almost 89.7 million dogs currently live in the U.S., so it can be to the business’s advantage to cater to dog owners by allowing them to visit their store. Keep in mind that, by law, you can’t bring your dog into grocery stores and restaurants, where it is a health risk to allow pets into the establishment.

Shopping With Dogs

A word of caution before you take your dog shopping with you. It can be frightening for a dog to go to a new place, full of strangers and activities. There are different smells, distracting sights and unfamiliar noises. Many people want to walk right up to strange dogs and greet them, which can add to a dog’s stress level. One strategy for dealing with this is to purchase a vest that says “Do Not Pet” or something similar. These are commonly used when training service dogs and therapy dogs or rehabilitating dogs that have been rescued.

From your dog’s point of view, stores can be confusing. Store aisles are like a narrow tunnel for your dog, and, if the shelves have openings between them, your dog can see people walking around on the other side of them. This can create anxiety because they don’t understand the concept of store aisles.

It is your responsibility as a dog owner to ensure your dog is calm and well-behaved and always on a leash. The best way to have a good experience shopping with your dog is to be prepared ahead of time. And always clean up after your dog!

Prepare Your Dog

As with any new experience for your dog, it’s best to start small and work your way up to longer shopping trips once your dog becomes used to shopping. A good starting point is to take your dog to an outdoor mall and go for a walk together there, such as the Colorado Springs Downtown Mall. If your dog seems stressed out, find a quiet bench and just sit together, giving your dog a chance to get used to being in that type of an environment.

Once your dog has gotten used to being around crowds of strange people, visit an indoor mall. Don’t go into any stores yet, just get your dog used to being in the mall. When you’re ready to start going inside, start with a pet store, where it is friendly and familiar with treats, toys and food. Once your dog is used to the pet store and is able to remain calm, it’s time to graduate to other types of stores.

Where to Shop With Your Dog

You might be surprised at how many major retailers are dog-friendly, but be sure to call a specific store before your visit to verify if you’re unsure about the store’s policies. Often, store managers determine the policies, and sometimes, if there are incidents with unruly or unleashed dogs, they may change the policy to service dogs only.
