When you have a stomach ache, you might reach for some saltine crackers, ginger ale or Pepto-Bismol to settle your stomach. But what should you do if your dog has an upset stomach?
Symptoms Your Dog Has an Upset Stomach
Typically, dogs with an upset stomach will exhibit some or most of these symptoms.
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Salivation
- Tries to eat grass or lick the floor
- Loss of appetite
- Flatulence
- Gurgling noises from the stomach
Determine If Your Dog Can Be Treated At Home or Needs to Go to the Vet
Home remedies may be appropriate for some dogs who do not have a serious underlying cause for their upset stomach.
Please take your dog to your veterinarian right away if your dog is:
- lethargic
- running a fever
- vomiting continuously
- having continual diarrhea
- seems to be dehydrated
- pacing nervously
- drooling uncontrollably
- retching without anything coming up
- has blood in his or her stool
- or your dog’s stomach appears to be distended.
These could be serious conditions that need to be treated by a professional.
Home Remedies to Help Your Dog’s Upset Stomach
If you determine your dog has a garden-variety upset stomach, here are 12 ways to treat your dog’s upset stomach at home.
-
Keep your dog hydrated
It’s really important that your dog stay hydrated at all times, but especially if they are experiencing vomiting and diarrhea. With diarrhea, they may very quickly become dehydrated, sometimes within a couple of hours.
Try giving your dog ice chips every 2 – 3 hours. See if your dog can keep that down before more ice cubes and teaspoons of water.
Don’t assume you can just offer water to your dog to help them stay hydrated. Dogs need electrolytes and vitamins to retain fluids. One solution is to give your dog Pedialyte. You give the same kind you give kids or you can go to an animal feed store to obtain a powder that can be mixed with water and given to your dog.
*NOTE: if your dog does not improve within 24 hours after being given Pedialyte, IMMEDIATELY take your dog to your veterinarian or animal emergency hospital. Dehydration in dogs can happen very quickly, causing possible organ failure or even death.
-
Check your dog’s temperature
Check your dog’s temperature using a rectal thermometer. There are ear thermometers for dogs but they are not as accurate. A dog’s normal temperature is 101.5◦F. A temperature of 102◦F or higher is considered a fever. If your dog’s temperature is 102◦F or higher or 99◦ or lower, you should take your dog to the veterinarian immediately to find out what’s wrong.
-
Determine what caused the upset stomach
Most of the time an upset stomach in a dog is caused by something the dog ingested. Dogs are notorious for eating things they shouldn’t, and there’s a long list of items that can cause problems for your dog. Try to figure out what might have caused your dog’s upset stomach to help your vet make a diagnosis.

Remove food for 12-24 hours
It is entirely normal for canines to go without food for periods of time in the wild. In the case that your dog’s stomach is upset, fasting will allow your dog’s gastrointestinal tract to rest and recover if inflamed.
If your dog is still a puppy, you should not remove food for longer than 12 hours or overnight. You can rub your puppy’s gums with maple syrup to keep his or her glucose level up. But make sure the syrup does not contain xylitol, a potentially lethal artificial sweetener if ingested by canines.
-
Bone broth
Bone broth is very healing for dogs. Simmer meat (on the bone) with apple cider vinegar and water in a crockpot. It will take about a day to make bone broth, so it’s best to make ahead and freeze. Be sure to skim off any fat before freezing.
-
DiarRice
DiarRice is a rice-based probiotic that will help soothe your pup’s stomach. DiarRice is easy to digest and tastes like chicken. DiarRice should work quickly, so if it doesn’t help right away, seek medical attention.
-
Bland diet
After your dog has fasted for 12-24 hours, and he or she is not vomiting, and can keep down liquids, it might be time to try the bland diet. The bland diet contains:
- Boiled rice (75%)
- Cooked white chicken meat (no skin or bones) or extra-lean hamburger (25%)
- Do not add any oils, fats or spices to the bland diet.
Gradually increase the amount of food you give your dog, starting with a tablespoon and waiting two hours. If your dog can keep that down, continue to increase the amount of food to 1/2 – 1 cup of bland diet every three or four hours.
Once your dog seems to be doing better, you can gradually add in his or her regular food until he is eating 100% of his regular diet again.
-
Probiotics
Once your dog is able to eat and appears to be feeling better, you can consider giving him or her unsweetened, plain yogurt that contains probiotics or a dog probiotic, such as FortiFlora, Prostora or Proviable. Probiotics contain living gut-friendly bacteria found naturally in the digestive tract. The goal of ingesting probiotics is to prevent gastrointestinal problems and boost your dog’s immune system.
-
Foods that can help
Foods that can help soothe an upset stomach and firm up your dog’s stool if he or she is having diarrhea include:
- Plain, canned pumpkin
- Oatmeal
- Plain, unsweetened yogurt
- Sweet potatoes
- Bananas
-
Slippery elm bark
Some veterinarians recommend slippery elm bark for dogs. Slippery elm bark is an herb that is used to treat digestive problems in dogs. Slippery elm bark contains mucilage which will coat, lubricate and sooth the inflamed mucous membranes of your dog’s stomach.
-
Discourage your dog from eating grass
It appears that some dogs have an innate drive to eat grass when their stomach is upset. Some people think the dog is trying to induce vomiting by ingesting grass, but not all vets agree on this. What veterinarians DO agree on, however, is that many lawns are treated with fertilizers and other chemicals, making it unsafe for canine consumption.
-
Over-the-counter medication
Some over-the-counter medications may help your dog if he or she is having diarrhea, but they should only be given under the guidance of your veterinarian. People have used Imodium, Pepto-Bismol and Pepcid to treat diarrhea in dogs. However, they may cause side effects, so it is best to check with your vet first.
While these home remedies can help your dog feel better, they in no way should be a substitute for veterinarian care. There are many reasons your dog could be sick, and only your vet can pinpoint the probable cause and recommend a proper course of treatment.
What home remedies have worked to help relieve your dog’s upset stomach? Please share with the rest of the Canine Campus community in the comments below…
Dog Mom says
My fur baby was on a bland diet (boiled chicken and white rice) for a prolonged period (weeks). For convenience, I used Instant Rice. I didn’t realize that Instant Rice does not have the same nutrients as regular white rice, and after a couple of weeks, my boy was stealing food off the cabinet and acting starved….which he was!
We also tried canned pumpkin. Pup was not a fan, but if you want to try it, be aware that, at least in my area, it is not available in the stores year round. I try to buy a can or two around Halloween just in case.

Hey my yorkie she weighs about 5#today she has been licking her lips and acts like she wants to throw up and has 2 loose bowel movements what do you suggest?
Joelle Audette says
Thanks for stopping by the Canine Campus blog. We suggest you reach out to a local veterinarian who can better help you with your dog’s specific symptoms.
Aubrey says
Cooked rice- thats what i give to my pups! But if it shows more concerns – take your pet to his vet.

Thank YOU for this comment. I had no clue the nutritional values differ from instant to regular white rice.
Again. Thank you!
Crystal says
Thank you!!
I had no idea either about that.

Joelle Audette says
You could call around to the local pet shops or Amazon carries it.
Leni Hubbard says
My dog has intermittent digestive problems. He just acts like he doesn’t feel well again this morning. He had some teeth issues and that has been addressed. It’s going on again this morning and he wouldn’t eat and acts like he is very uncomfortable. He isnt throwing up . Ive noticed his stomach is growling this morning and he hasnt eaten since last nite. I have had him on canned lamb by blue because i thought he might be sensitive to chicken. I dont give him people food. Just veggies and fruit. Im at my witts end and vet cant find anything. Any suppestions on what to add or leave out of his diet. I cant afford lot of lab tests. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Joelle Audette says
Hi Leni,
It sounds like you might need a second opinion on the digestive issues your dog is having. If you’re here in the Colorado Springs area, try calling the Humane Society for a referral to a nonprofit organization. They may be able to help defray the cost of testing, exams, treatment, etc. Their number is 719-473-1741. If you’re in a different area, try to locate a local animal shelter to find a referral. Some organizations raise money to help people on a sliding fee scale. I hope your dog feels better soon!

I’m sorry to hear your pup is still having problems. Have you considered consulting a telehealth veterinary service like Pawp? Their services are low cost and are available online. Hopefully they will be able to help!

Blue Buffalo has a terrible track record with regard to recalls and has even killed dogs. I would stop feeding that immediately. Even if your pup is feeling better now. I would never feed any dog any food by them, even if it were free. I honestly can’t believe they’re still in business.
Joelle Audette says
Thanks for the input and for stopping by the Canine Campus blog!

Amen to that… blue is very bad food… it also messed up my baby’s stomach now he has to be on a special diet.

Leni, hope things are better but if not my 4 pound Morki had stomach problems every other week. I started using Evander low fat vegetarian complete balanced dinner with Dr. Harvey’s “Runs Be Gone” from Amazon. Dog food local. I changed her from chicken to steak meat mixed in with a little pumpkin . When she appears sick I give her 1/2 pepsid and 1/4 teaspoon crushed tums. A few hours later no girgle and she eats.
Good luck, I think backtiera from bad teeth upsets the stomach.
Good luck to all that reads this.

Some dogs can’t eat fruit and veggies the same as humans do but give him some yogurt and mix a little in his food he may have acid reflux and try a raw diet it’s at the pet stores but the yogurt just might do the trick
ReynoldsWRAP mama says
I agree with the fruits and veggies. However if you want to try one veggie at a time to see if he has any issues with each individual veggie or fruit, and then go from there
Karen Gerstein says
Watch doc ‘Pet Fooled’u will be cooking him real good after

Yes, contact your vet, ask about an OTC. My vet gave us 4 pills for a road trip and ended up being 48$. Drooling and excessive licking are both good signs of the dog about to or did vomit.

Thanks for your input Dustin.

Licking is a sign of upset stomach yogurt in his food may solve it
Nancy says
wow, reading this is helpful…my dog has had an upset stomach, vomiting and diahrea. No more of either, but he does not want to eat…he ate a little more this morning. I have been to a vet, but it is getting expensive…The vet gave me prescription food which my dog is not crazy about. Hills prescription sells on line for $70 a bag…woah, a bit much. How do I get him back eating? I don’t want to hurt him. He is still on a medication from the vet.
Joelle Audette says
We are sorry to hear your pup is not feeling well. Have you tried calling your veterinary clinic to let them know your dog doesn’t like the new food and ask if they can suggest something a little more affordable? You need to be working with a vet who has seen your dog and knows your case. Hope your pooch feels better soon!

Our new puppy is almost 6 months and eats everything she finds on the ground inside and outside and licks our floors and carpets all day. How can we stop her from doing this. Last night she became very sick from something she ate or licked.
Joelle Audette says
Excessive eating and licking are some of the puppy behaviors that can drive you crazy! As I’m sure you are aware, licking and eating are common puppy behaviors because these are tactile ways puppies explore and learn about the world around them. There are many great articles out there you can explore to give you ideas of how to approach this issue. One suggestion I would offer is to enroll your puppy in a puppy training class. Our trainer, Patti Davieau, will help you work on “drop it”, “leave it” and other training techniques. The good news is most puppies do grow out of these concerning behaviors.

My 2 year old Chihuahua, who is 5.5 lbs., just ate a whole persimmon, seeds and all. I read that persimmons are ok for dogs, but not the seeds. He ingested those as well. I’m worried now and doing the waiting game to see how he is going to react. He seems fine right now and its been about 45 minutes since he ingested it. Its Sunday, so my vet is closed. I will call the vet first thing tomorrow. I’m hoping I don’t have to run to emergency. Anything I can do or watch for in the meantime that might help? I figure he will have diarrhea. Thanks for any advice. I’m stressing.
Joelle Audette says
I hope your Chihuahua is feeling better by now.
In the future, I recommend you take action immediately by calling your veterinarian, ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435, or the Pet Poison Helpline at 1-800-213-6680.

My 85 pound, 11 year old Labrador retriever has advanced hip displacement and she takes Rimadyl twice daily. She has dog food with glucosamine and chondroitin in it. We mix it with chicken and cooked rice, she gets a cup of the mix twice a day when she gets her medicine. In the last few weeks she showed signs of stomach upset. Smelly farts, burps, licks the carpeting, and she has actually thrown up foamy white bile a few times. She already takes a Pepsid with her morning medicine. How can we help her? She needs the pain meds but they seem to cause tummy upset.
Joelle Audette says
Ann, it sounds like you are already doing a lot to help your pup! I recommend you return to your veterinarian to let them know your dog is having trouble tolerating her medication. Hope she feels better soon!

Wow. Your situation sounds exactly like ours with our Chocolate Lab Owen . Ours used to also throw up, but nothing would come out during the night. He just made that ratchet sound. We felt so bad for him. He had it for seven years of his life. He was on everything to help him. Ours passed away last summer . We miss him terribly. I honestly hope your fur child gets better but our dog food in this country is cooked at such a high temperature and has the worst ingredients in all of them.
We wish someone would step up and force dog food companies to have higher standards and qualities for dog food.
We have a 8 month old Black Lab and we are only feeding him a clean and healthy diet. I can only pray he never goes through what our sweet gentle amazing Owen did.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Owen. Thank you for sharing your story and alerting other dog parents. So happy to hear you have a new puppy! Please stop back by the Canine Campus blog in the near future!

Our 11year old Welsh Corgi, had her teeth cleaned by a mobile vet here at home earlier this week. They didn’t need to extract any teeth, which has happened in the past . Even so, they left us some Clinamycin, an antibiotic to give her . We followed the instructions of one capsule every 12hrs once she started eating again after her procedure. After a couple of days of this, she started acting very lethargic and not interested in necessarily being in the same room with the rest of the family. Very unlike her, especially as a Corgi. Then 2 days ago, she almost acted constipated and then that seemed to go away. Her appetite seemed to take a change , as she normally is a food hound and the past two days she isn’t interested at all in eating. I decided this morning to stop the antibiotic. We emailed the mobile vet. No response yet. Her stool this morning was pretty soft too. I just gave her some pumpkin and she gobbled that up. She also has been drinking lots of water, lots more than normal. I will give her more pumpkin in a couple of hours and see how she is doing. If this sounds like the right thing to do or not, I would appreciate any comments.

Actually Blue Buffalo has one of the best inspection systems. So if it seems like they have a lot of recalls it is because they pull canned food “just in case”. I have fed Blue Buffalo for years and my vet says it is one of the best foods on the market and it isn’t what she feeds. I very much think you need to do more research before blasting a company. Some of the most expensive foods have been pulled from the market for dogs dying. Fact check is in order.

My dog is recently recovering from tapeworms and constipation. I initially took him in cuz he was throwing up and a week of diarrhea and thought a mouse got in his water bowl. The day of the appointment he became constipated. The vet cleared him out a bit and said he had tapeworms. I was shocked to find that out Anyhow he told me to do boil boneless chicken and rice. He said to use the standard white rice from the grocery store and boil boneless/skinless chicken. He said you don’t need a special brand of rice as long as it’s not instant. I was also told to give him a couple small pieces of bananas. We went to the vet 3/2/21 and he pooped the day I started giving him banana pieces (not banana chips), 3/4/21. I started feeding him chicken and rice the day before I went to the vet.

My dog doesn’t eat and always sleeping it didn’t even do anything i m so worried and i m just 12 year old girl and my dogs name is max I didn’t count his age sorry but plss help my pup.
Joelle Audette says
I’m so sorry to hear Max isn’t eating and seems to be sleeping too much. The best thing for you to do is to ask your family for help with this situation. Your dog needs to be seen by a veterinarian who can determine what is wrong and help your family decide the next steps for your dog. There are many different things that might be wrong; only a trained veterinarian will be able to help. I hope Max feels better soon.

Years ago I had two senior dogs and about every 4-6 weeks or so one of them would have an upset stomach (gurgling sounds from their stomachs) and/or throw up, sometimes just bile. Otherwise they were pretty healthy, aside from the general aches and pains of getting old. My vet suggested dosing 1 tablet of “acid reducer.” One was a Cocker Spaniel, the other just a bit larger. This helped a lot – the gurgling would subside as would the vomiting. This is a human medication, but safe for dogs. It’s not terribly expensive (I’d get the generic version, in bubble pack form). Really helpful too because you don’t need a prescription and it’s easily available in pharmacies. Hope this might help as a possible option for occasional stomach upset in your pup.

My dog is a mixed small breed about 15 lbs he vomits often especially at night. I have spent over $2000 in vet bills expensive dog food he will not eat. He has kidney stones bad back. Should l just have him put to sleep and save him from more suffering? I need help here.

I’m so sorry your dog is having health issues. Canine Campus is not a veterinary clinic and we are unable to give veterinary advice. A decision about how to move forward in the best interests of your dog needs to be made by you, your loved ones and your veterinarian. I hope your dog is feeling better by now and wish you all the best in the future.

Hi.
My dog is 11 ut rs old . I cook his chicken in crockpot, he gets boil rice , I’ll switch up his veggies (poached eggs, sweet potatoes, carrots, string beans) . He like fruits , bananas, melons, watermelon, strawberries.
Last nite he didn’t want his dinner & now his breakfast. I can he his gut making noises. Theres no diarrhea, vomiting, he has eat grass. He does have allergies so his noise will run off & on. He’s drinking water. He has done this before to see if I’ll give him his treats.
I have place chicken broth in his bowl & that worked last time . What else can o do.
